WHEN DID JESUS GET NAILED TO THE CROSS?

Postby Bill the Omnipotent on Wed Oct 01, 2008 9:17 am

Roswhatever was yesterday. Apparently it's the jewish new year and a party. Then the subject of yom kippur comes up, and it's not a party ('we beat ourselves up on it', said one jewish sportguy on the radio, so it's not appropriate to wish one a 'Happy yom kippur'). So that's gets me to thinking that's there's not a christian equivalent. We got the birth of christ and the resurrection, but not the nailing. I want another day off.

That's actually what we refer to as Good Friday (or at least the death of Christ is Good Friday). How do you like that for irony?

But its with the Holy Lands best teachers. Expand your horizons. You work at a friggin' university. Your wife knows languages.

Besides, I've been mostly getting WoW ads.

Is Good Friday a couple of days before Easter, or is it the 40 day thing with lent in between? And if it's the 40 day thing, why'd they let him hang so long? Didn't he begin to smell after a while? And when did he get wrapped in the Shroud not from Turin?

This Christianity stuff is confusing. Do they make a Dummies book?

Good Friday is followed by Easter Sunday... died on Friday, rose from the dead on Sunday... of so the story goes.

PatrickJ can explain Lent better than me, since that's a Catholic thing.

I believe that might be Palm Sunday to Easter; but I could be wrong.

(Palm Sunday was when Jesus arrived in Jerusalem).

Nailed Friday, died in a few hours with Roman soldier help (they broke his legs to end it quickly and go home) and rose on Sunday.

The really confusing thing is that the 40 days of lent between Ash Wednesday and Easter are not consecutive. You don't include Sundays when you are supposed to continue celebrating Mass, which is considered a good thing and a happy day.

Palm Sunday is the week before Easter. The palms are saved for next year, when they are burned to create the ashes for Ash Wednesday.

The day before Ash Wednesday is (in French) called Mardi Gras

Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement. You get to go to temple and say you'd done lots of bad stuff the previous year and be absolved of it.

AKA 'dirty forehead day' to some.

Isn't there a Fat Tuesday somewhere in there?

So they do beat themselves up. Kinda like catholic confession, I assume.

Mardi Gras is Fat Tuesday. That's even what the translation means.

It's the last big blowout where people are licentious before Lent which is a somber period. In New Orleans, police on horseback clear the streets of revelers at midnight when it becomes Ash Wednesday.

Most places that have the celebration call it Carnival not Mardi Gras and the party starts earlier and is more than one day.

Bill, you'll be happy to know that in the Catholic faith, or the "One True Faith" as it's commonly called, there are 365 holidays a year. Any day that's not a big holiday is some feast day of something or other, any of which is an excuse to take a day off should you choose to convert. "Hey, my faith celebrates the feast day of Saint Bruno, I need to take Friday off."

Interestingly, even February 29th has a feast day, St. Oswald.

Feast Day Calendar.

Remember that are dust, and to dust you shall return.

Now I'm going to go flail myself, as all good Catholics should on Ash Wednesday.
